Coolant intake manifold leak on the 1.4L Turbo

The plastic intake manifold on the 1.4L turbo Cruze has a coolant crossover built into it that cracks internally over time, letting coolant leak into the intake and cylinders rather than outside the engine - which is why the coolant level drops with no puddle underneath the car. A sweet smell in the cabin or white smoke from the exhaust means it has already progressed, and at that point it is genuinely urgent: enough coolant pooling in a cylinder can hydrolock the engine and cause serious internal damage on the next start. Manifold replacement is the standard fix, and it is far cheaper done at the first sign of unexplained coolant loss than after white smoke appears.
