Timing chain and balance shaft wear on the M271

A rattling or whirring sound from the front of the engine at startup, especially one that gets louder over weeks, is a well-documented weak point of the M271 1.8L turbo four used across the C-Class and SLK lineup. The timing chain tensioner and balance shaft sprocket wear down, and unlike some startup rattles this one carries real urgency: if the chain jumps time, valves can contact pistons and turn a chain job into a full internal rebuild.
