Oil dilution on the 1.5L Turbo

Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo · 2018

On 2016-2018 Civics with the 1.5L turbo, short cold-weather trips can let unburned gasoline seep past the piston rings into the crankcase, thinning the oil and raising its level above the full mark. It shows up most in cold climates with lots of short-distance driving. On its own it is not an emergency, but thinned oil lubricates worse over time, so accelerated wear is the real long-term risk if it keeps happening trip after trip. Honda issued an ECU reflash that changes fuel strategy in cold weather, and many owners get it done free under a service campaign - check eligibility with a Honda dealer by VIN before assuming a repair bill. If real engine wear has already occurred, cost rises into the thousands.
