Cold-start rattle from worn cam phasers

Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost · 2012

A rattle right at cold start that fades after a couple of seconds is one of the most reported issues on the first-generation 3.5L EcoBoost. The cam phasers and timing chain tensioner do not get oil pressure instantly on startup, and as they wear the delay gets longer and louder. It is not urgent the first time you hear it, but the real risk is the chain eventually skipping a tooth, which can bend valves and turn a moderate repair into a full engine job. A phaser and chain kit replacement, done before that happens, is the standard fix and the cost most owners should budget for once the rattle becomes consistent rather than occasional.

Track this fix against your exact car, save it, and get alerted the next time it's due.
